Field Trip: Hot Spots for Red Knots

Trip Leader and Recorder: Kurt Schwarz

Date of Trip: Saturday May 24, 2014

Location: Hot Spots for Red Knots: The Final Episode

Details: Sun was cresting the horizon as we left Meadowbrook at 6:00. We investigated Broadkill Marsh at 7:50-8:15, with best bird White-rumped Sandpiper. We met the bulk of the group at 8:30, and walked the Dike Trail, where we found the best birds of the trip, two Red-necked Phalaropes. We subsequently visited Prime Hook Beach Road, Fowler Beach, and Dupont Nature Center. Dupont delivered the promised Red Knots in numbers, with large numbers of other shorebirds. We then drove to Bombay Hook, which proved to be disappointing, not many shorebirds at all, but two red fox kits put on a nice show. The weather was in the 60s rising to the 70s. It was windy early, making rather chilly. Mostly sunny followed by increasing clouds. Light rain at mid-day.

Number on trip: 6
